Email Communication
To begin an application you will need to register to SmartyGrants. The email you use to register will be considered your 'Primary Email' address.
Please sign up with a personal email address. Your university email address can be entered as your secondary email address.
By creating a profile in our SmartyGrants platform, you agree to receive occasional email communications from Westpac Scholars Trust to stay informed about important application dates, eligibility requirements and helpful hints about the submission process. Eligibility
By commencing an application, you confirm that you meet the following eligibility requirements:
I am an Australian citizen or permanent resident. I understand I will be required to provide supporting documentation on request.
I have been awarded a PhD between 2019 and 2022; or have obtained an Eligibility Exemption from the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) or equivalent at my host university.
I will commence the Fellowship by 30 June 2026.
My proposed research must contribute to the future of Australia in one of the Trust's priority funding areas; Australia in Asia, Thriving Tech Sector, an Inclusive Australia and Sustainable Futures.
My proposed research must include international opportunities which will develop your leadership skills and global networks, such as; study tours for the purpose of research, attending a short course or conference, an internship or volunteering.
I can supply two letters of reference, one academic reference and one personal reference as well as a letter of support from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) or equivalent. Reference templates will be provided.
I am able to attend interview with the National Selection Panel in Sydney (3 & 4 December 2025). Please note: travel and accommodation costs associated with this event will be covered by Westpac Scholars Trust.
I am able to attend the Westpac Scholars’ Summit in Sydney in (Late March 2026). Travel and accommodation costs associated with this event are also covered by Westpac Scholars Trust.

Submission Process
Review your application using the 'Review and Submit' button.
You will not be able to submit your application until all the compulsory questions are completed and there are no validation errors.
You'll receive a confirmation email with your submission attached.
Check spam/junk folders if confirmation email is missing.
If you have not received a confirmation email, it means your application was NOT submitted.
Incomplete applications or applications received after the closing date are not eligible.
