Eligibility Criteria

1. What is your Australian Citizenship Status? * Required

Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. You will be required to provide supporting documentation on request.
2. Please select the year your PhD was awarded or confirm that you have obtained an eligibility exemption from the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) or equivalent at your host university. * Required
Note: Applicants must have been awarded a PhD between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2023 or obtain an Eligibility Exemption from the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) or equivalent at your host university during the application process – please refer to your university web site. Eligibility exemption is based on career interruption. Career interruption reasons are listed in the Funding Guidelines.

  • Attend the National Assessment Centre in Sydney (23rd or 24th November 2026), if shortlisted;
  • Attend The Westpac Scholars Summit in Sydney (Late April 2027), if successful;
  • Commence the Fellowship by 30 June 2027, if successful.

Supporting Documentation Required

The following documentation will be required on page 4 of this application form.

  • Your CV (max 4-5 pages) which must include a minimum:
    • Formal qualifications and any prizes, awards, honours and other esteem indicators;
    • Appointments, including consultancies;
    • Research/creative activity outputs, including bibliographic details, year of publication, individual contribution by percentage, evidence of impact; and 
    • Research/creative activity funding, including title of grant, funding body, grant category, individual contribution and role in the grant, year, total grant value, any patents and evidence of impact.

Head of Department/School approval

Eligibility exemption process

An eligibility exemption request (EER) calculator must be sent to RIC-researchgrants@unimelb.edu.au prior to the EOI closing date, Thursday 23 July 2026. If you intend to apply using an eligibility exemption request, please download and complete the calculator from the UniMelb Westpac Research Fellowship page well before the EOI closing date, or email RIC-Researchgrants@unimelb.edu.au with any requests for access or support.

Australian National University Applicant Information (Not Applicable)
